On May 16, 2018, NSP’ s National Board adopted resolutions making it easier for those classified as an Emergency Medical Technician, an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician or a Paramedic (as defined by NHTSA) to obtain or maintain OEC status.
In the past, we have refused to allow potential patrollers to skip our OEC class and “challenge” based on their medical training or credentials. Our rationale was largely twofold-first, we firmly believe that the camaraderie and team work developed during the OEC class is an essential element of being a patroller at Perfect North Slopes. Second, non-OEC training is not a substitute for local protocols and NSP specific knowledge. We have many outstanding patrollers at PNS who have strong medical backgrounds and certifications of various types and each has gone through the OEC class process. It is our intention to continue that requirement despite the opportunity that National has provided.
In addition, in order to patrol at PNS, we will also continue to require annual satisfactory completion of the Refresher, notwithstanding any opportunity provided by our National organization to skip same.
We are very fortunate to have so many patrollers with such strong medical training and background, but we believe the annual Refreshers provide an important opportunity to not only refresh existing skills but also to learn new skills and local protocols.
Thank you all for your service and dedication to our Patrol.
Best Wishes,
Mike
